The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is an independent statutory agency. Their role is to implement the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Their aim is to support a better life for Australians living with a significant and permanent disability and their families and carers. The NDIS means peace of mind for every Australian – whether you are living with a disability or you become disabled later in life.
NDIS’ priority is to ensure that those with a disability continue to get the support they need. The changes needed to existing disability support systems are significant. Arrangements are being made to ensure the scheme be introduced gradually. Thus ensuring a smooth transition for people with a disability and support providers.

There are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability. When it is fully rolled out, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will provide about 460,000 Australians aged under 65, who have permanent and significant disability with funding for supports and services. For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need.
The NDIS can provide all people with disability with information and connections to services in their communities such as doctors, sporting clubs, support groups, libraries and schools, as well as information about what support is provided by each state and territory government.
The NDIS began in some trial sites around Australia in July 2013. From 1 July 2016, it was introduced over three years in stages around Australia to ensure its success and sustainability. For NSW, click the link below.
You will need to meet specific requirements to access the NDIS. Find out if you can access the NDIS by completing the Eligibility Checklist. ( URL: https://www.ndis.gov.au/applying-access-ndis/am-i-eligible )
